48 Treacherous US-550 between Silverton + Ouray

They call this area the “Million Dollar Highway” because back in the 20s it supposedly cost a million dollars a mile to build.  (Now the tourist folks say it offers million dollar views.)  On the road we crossed Molas Pass, elevation 10,970 ft. and Red Mountain Pass, elevation 11,018 ft, in addition to the previously noted Coal Bank Pass (10,640).  At some points it was a positively pulse increasing drive – narrow twisting roads, step drop offs, no guard rails – and we were driving the Explorer.  I was amazed to see folks towing the huge 5th-wheels cruising along right with us.
