15 “The Beach” at GSNP

These are the largest dunes in North America (or the western hemisphere – depending upon your source), and the locals really do treat the area like a beach, with the water being provided by snow melt and the Medano Creek.  One of the more unique features of the Medano Creek area is the “wave” action.  Sand in the water accumulates to form small dams.  As these dams grow larger they eventually collapse causing waves of water to flow down the creek.  The day after our visit there was to be a huge sand castle building competition at this exact location drawing teams from hundreds of miles around.
